Generally speaking, gardens thrive with one to two applications of traditional fertilizer (such as manure) per year. Slow-release fertilizers should be applied to the garden once every three months or so (once per season). Quick-release fertilizer is best applied approximately every 30 days.

Depending on what sort of gardening you are maintaining, as well as what sort of fertilizer you’re using, the frequency of how often you should fertilize your garden varies greatly.

Pre-mixing fertilizer with compost and feeding plants with a water-soluble fertilizer once every month or two is a great rule of thumb for safe fertilizing practices.

Trees should be fertilized just once per year though. Avoid the temptation to fertilze them more often, as too much of a good thing may lead to dead or severaly nutrient burnt trees.

Flowers, on the other hand, require much more regular fertilizing for the best results. Those who fertilize their flowers weekly or bi-weekly enjoy faster growth and high bloom yields.

How Often Should YOU Be Fertilizing YOUR Garden?

Many plants, however, prefer little to no fertilizer at all. For this reason alone, be sure to research the sort of plants you are growing and the types of fertilizer that work the best with them.

Too much fertilizer applied to plants that don’t need it can increase the amount of nitrogen to dangerous levels (and kill the plants).

Before you start fertilizing your garden, make sure you know what sort of nutrients your plants like, and how often they need it.
